Zoom H4n

I’ve just purchased the Zoom H4n recorder to sit along side my 7D for recording wildtrack and any other wildlife sounds, there are various reviews of this product on the net and some of them highlight the hiss at low level recordings (pre amp noise).

I have already posted an issue with the Canon 7D in relation to Audio hiss so you may think why purchase something that has the same problem? In short, it doesn’t, yes it has a slight hiss at low level recordings but nothing as bad as the 7D.

The following Mp3 was recorded with the internal Mics, Dusk, Clear skies, Distant traffic…

The following Mp3  was recorded with an external mic Sennheiser ME66 Shotgun Microphone same enviroment as above

Both clips were what i would call low level sound IE ambiance, you can hear from the clips that attaching an external Mic reduces the hiss considerably.

The following clip of a Song thrush (14ft Away ) demonstrates the ME66 Zoom H4n and the Quality of Audio

So would I recommend it?

A BIG YES its an excellent piece of kit and an essential aid for recording sound in the field, for its price (£288) ok it has a slight hiss from the pre amps ? either move closer to the subject or attach an external mic?

Once I have gained enough selection of Sounds I will be uploading a new section for you to preview.
Thanks Paul
